How to Choose Home Paint Colors

Paint Color
If you’re in a quandary about a color combination to use, a good rule of thumb is to start with a reference point. Think of a painting or other piece of art you admire, the colors that make your wardrobe or a photograph you simply love.

Alternatively, you can think of colors that naturally appeal to you. These are good reference points to begin with in helping you choose the colors that will best suit your home.

However, irrespective of where and how you get inspiration for the painting in your home, there are some rules you should always keep in mind.
  • If you intend using more than one color in a room, don’t use more than three colors. If you decide to go with 3 bold colors the third one should be neutral so your eyes can rest.
  • Start by choosing the boldest color you have in mind and then you can choose one or two other colors that will complement the bold color.
  • Don’t be afraid of to experiment. You can always change colors you don’t like.

Another good rule of thumb is to remember the color wheel which we all learned in school. Red, yellow and blue are the primary colors and combining any of them will produce a secondary color such as orange or purple. Colors that are close to each other on the wheel such as purple and blue are similar to each other and will allow one color to stand out more. Colors such as red and green that are opposite each other on the wheel are complimentary; and will nicely play off each other.

If you have a small room and you want to make it look serene, painting it with blues, greens and purples will help in that regard while colors such as yellow and red will give your room a more lively and vigorous feel.

If you’re looking to achieve a subtle and soothing look for your bathroom or bedroom, you can stay within the same shade and use a monochromatic approach such as selecting a variety of shades of blue.

If on the other hand, you want an elegant and flexible look to any of your rooms neutral colors are your best bet. And don’t get it wrong, neutral colors are not limited to just beige or white. You can transform a living room into an elegant one using different shades of neutral colors such as almond walls with red toned browns on the trim.

You can opt for either darker or lighter neutral colors to give the room a different look. But keep in mind that the lighter the color you choose, the more spacious the room will look. Ask Jacksonville painters.
You don’t have to spend a ton of money hiring an interior designer to redo the look of your house. With some paint and a touch of imagination, you can quickly and quite easily change how your home feels and looks.

Imagine how you want to feel when you’re inside a room. Do you want to feel serenity and elegance? Choose light greens or neutral shades. And if you want to feel comfortable and homey, choose yellows such as for your kitchen. The point is you can easily feel the way you want in your home with a couple of buckets of paint, a roller or brush and a touch of imagination.
